I knew it would be dark and bloody. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is one sad beast. I was crying last night when I finished it, I admit, just like oprah. Mainly because the father is so good and so ashamed of the world he's left his son. I don't have children yet and I can still feel the weight of that grief. The man wants the boy to feel hopeful and meaningful; but the man is no longer certain that he, himself, feels those things. McCarthy is brave to blaze the road through such bleak terrain, and it is a punishing book, but it's the way he makes you believe in the father's love that makes it so good. The man's mission (he does become sort of a self-styled messiah, as Michael Chabon says in this good essay)may be insane but it's also inspiring. I'm sure oprah will say the same thing when she speaks to McCarthy on her show on June 5th. Ha. I'm gonna watch. How embarrassing.

I adore Cormac McCarthy. I finished the border trilogy last year and was so happy to see him get the Pulitzer Prize. I'll pick this up sometime this summer to read. I also need to read No Country for Old Men.
Do pick it up. It's a quick read and well worth it. Blood Meridian is crazy also.
I actually picked No Country for Old men at the library and will start it as soon as I finish Torpedo Alley. The Road has been hard to get out here. I may just have to go to Borders and pick up a copy.
I'll have to read Blood Meridian too. I'm kind of taking my time through McCarthy's books though.
Man, I love Cormac McCarthy. I think he is one of the most talented writers working today. But you have to be careful. Reading one of his books always puts me in a stone cold funk for like two weeks.

I finished No Country for Old Men a few weeks ago. I have,"the road" on my bookshelf but I'm going to wait a bit to read it. A brutal, spare, beautifully written book...and like the border trilogy...haunting.
I had a conversation with a friend who felt that McCarthy here was repudiating Faulkner, who said that "I refuse to accept the decline of man..." &c. I have to disagree. The Father here is still capable of everything that Faulkner prized in man, in that famous speech; his ability to endure, his immutable spirit, his unfathomable and unknowable soul. Personally, I think CM is warning us that we are still foolish enough to kill ourselves, every minute, and that he has lived long enough to believe that we just might, yet. I shuddered my way through this harrowing book to find that I agreed with him.
